1947 to 1949 Vermontville Baseball

From 1947 to 1949, the Vermontville baseball team had a 36-1 record. 

There were nine players (or representatives) at the ceremony to accept the award.  Terry Lowery, Jim Zemke and Homer Winnegar came to the microphone to highlight each year.  In 1947, the team had a 10-0 record.  In 1948, they were 11-0.  IN 1949, the team had a 10-1 record.

The players had an amazing level of detail (especially when you consider that 1949 was seventy years ago) about the events of the seasons. 

Ken Beardslee, who was inducted to the hall in 2007 was the pitcher.  In one nine inning game, he struck out 26 batters.  He also played professional baseball for nine years.

Gina Harrington was an outstanding Basketball and Volleyball player for Potterville High School.  Potterville won state championships in Volleyball her sophomore and senior year; her junior year Potterville was the runner-up.  Gina Harrington was named First Team All-State in Volleyball.

In basketball, she scored 1046 career points and holds the Potterville all-time record for points scored in one season; she scored 550 points in 1989.  She went on to star in basketball for Lansing Community College and Ferris State.

As Ms. Harrington passed away a few years ago, her brother, Bob Harrington accepted her plaque.

Bob Harrington told us of how Gina Harrington lived and played with passion, drive and determination.  She was an extremely talented athlete who was good at golf and softball as well as volleyball and basketball.  He noted that she played in four state championship games - - in 1989, Potterville was the Class D Runner-up in basketball. 

She was very humble about her athletic success.  For he career, she was a social worker for Family Protective Services.  She served sixteen years in a tough job that burns out many employees after about eighteen months.  She was a top trainer in the State of Michigan. 

Bob Harrington thanked Gina’s coaches, friends and family.  Her toughness helped make her a successful athlete.  Also, even though she had excellent statistics, she always placed team success ahead of her individual performance.

Pat Stump was a great football player who was an All Capital Circuit and All City standout as a two-way tackle and kicker.  He also excelled at Northern Michigan University where he earned four letters as an offensive tackle and defensive linebacker. 

He was an NAIA All-American for his last two years.  In 1964, he was Co-Captain and MVP of the team.  He is a member of the Northern Michigan University Hall of Fame.

Mr. Stump was excited to enter the hall, but unfortunately, he passed away a couple weeks before the ceremony.  His son, Matt Stump, came to the podium to accept his plaque.

Matt told us of his father’s happiness at being accepted in the hall.  He told us how Pat Stump valued his old teammates’ friendship and thanked all of Pat’s family for helping him to achieve what he did.
