“E.J.” Ernest Pasteur, Jr.

By Chuck Krafft

E.J. Pasteur had an excellent career as a football player and as a wrestler at Lansing Sexton High.  He led his football team in tackles as a senior.  He was named All-Area and All-District as a football player; he also was given Honorable Mention to the All-State Team.

As a wrestler, he led the Sexton team in pins as a Junior and as a Senior.  In both seasons he was named to the All-State team.  He was Co-Captain of the MHSAA Class A State Championship Team as well.

He moved on to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point where he lettered four years on the wrestling team.  He achieved championships in the New York Collegiate Championships, the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association and the Greco-Roman Wrestling at the University Nationals.  He also won a Gold Medal in Greco-Roman Wrestling at the Pan-Am Championships.

The previous inductee may have set a world record for the shortest induction speech.  E.J. said he would not be doing that (although he was not overly long either.)

He thanked all the people who helped him as he observed that “People seldom do it alone.”  He thanked his coach at Sexton.  He recounted moving to Lansing from Grand Rapids before his junior year.  The people at Sexton, especially the wrestling coach and other wrestlers really reached out to welcome him so he chose Sexton.

The teammates at Sexton pushed him to be the best wrestler he could be.  The practices at Sexton were so demanding that he described meets as being like a “cakewalk.”

He noted the difference between competitive wrestling as what is done on WWE.  He also thanked his family for his patience; when he was learning, he practiced many of his wrestling moves on his family members!!

2000 Grand Ledge Football

By Chuck Krafft

The 2000 Grand Ledge Football team had a 13-1 record and won the State Championship.  They scored 31.0 points per game and gave up only 7.3 points per game.  After losing their second game, they finished the season with a twelve game winning streak.

After the players introduced themselves, Coach Pat O’Keefe told us the story of the championship season!  Coach O’Keefe thanked Grand Ledge for giving him an opportunity to add football coaching to his teaching and baseball coaching abilities.  Twenty-seven years as an assistant prepared him for the head coaching role.

His first task was to put together a good staff; he had to learn to delegate to his assistance and the team improved after he did so.  He was quick complimentary about the skills and abilities of his assistant coaches.

He told the story of the championship season; after losing the second game, they won the rest of their games.  The defeated several undefeated and higher ranked teams on their way to the final game.  They had to defeat Clarkston in the semifinals on a cold, snowy day.

The final game against Utica Eisenhower was a tough game; Grand Ledge was behind 14-7 in the fourth quarter.  His team blocked an Eisenhower field goal attempt to avoid falling farther behind.  After his quarterback changed a play and threw the ball for a touchdown, he decided to try for a two point conversion.  When the conversion failed, they had to kick the ball off with limited time left in the game.

They were able to recover an onside kick and score the winning touchdown before time ran out.  Grand Ledge won the game and the State Championship by a 19-14 margin.

He thanked the committee and shared some final thoughts.  One notable line from the end of the speech was his observation that “Love beats hate every single time.”

Jeff Tropf

By Chuck Krafft

Jeff Tropf had a great basketball career at Holt High School and at Central Michigan University.

He is Holt High School’s career leading scorer with 1550 points; he averaged 23.5 points per game.  He was named All-State his junior and senior years.  His senior year, his Holt Rams were the Class B Runner-Up in the State Tournament.

He played briefly at Michigan State University; he left there after one semester in the wake of a controversy not of his making.  After a brief stay at another college, he decided to try out for the Central Michigan basketball team.  At the time, Central Michigan was a powerhouse in the Mid-American Conference and sent a number of players to the NBA.

He also excelled at Central Michigan as he was first team All-MAC with a 17.3 scoring average.  He led the MAC with 11 rebounds per game.  He was selected as Team MVP one year and had an excellent 55% shooting percentage.

Because of injuries, after he was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers, he never was able to play in the NBA.

He has fond memories of his career.  He thanked his family and noted that he also played on a great football team.
