Jean Robinson Clum

By Chuck Krafft

Jean Robinson Clum was a pioneer in women’s athletics in the Lansing Area.  In High School, there were no varsity level sports for women; she participated and excelled in many intramural sports including swimming and volleyball.

In College at Michigan State University, she excelled in Field Hockey, Basketball and Softball.  She started for three years on the Field Hockey team, four years on the Basketball team and one year on the Softball team.

She continued her athletic career as a coach.  Her volleyball teams had a 70-1 record and won league championships all five years she coached.  She had a 100-12 league record and a 148-27 overall record as a softball coach.  Her 1981 team at Lansing Eastern won the state softball championship; her teams also won many tournament and league championships.

She pointed out that her family had an athletic background as her father was an athletic trainer at Michigan State.  She also thanked Eleanor Dorson, an advisor who helped her get started.

She was proud to be part of the MSU women’s athletic program in its infant stages.  As a coach, she strived to stress fundamentals, coach with patience and to make the sports fun for the players.

When Title IX took effect, she helped get the Lansing Eastern athletic programs started.  She is really pleased with the progress that has been made in women’s athletics.

She pointed out that as a coach, “You are only as good as the athletes you can work with.”  She thanked her athletes for helping her to succeed as a coach.
