Jean Robinson Clum

Jean
Robinson Clum was a pioneer in women’s athletics in the Lansing Area. In High School, there were no varsity level
sports for women; she participated and excelled in many intramural sports
including swimming and volleyball.
In College
at Michigan State University, she excelled in Field Hockey, Basketball and Softball. She started for three years on the Field
Hockey team, four years on the Basketball team and one year on the Softball
team.
She
continued her athletic career as a coach.
Her volleyball teams had a 70-1 record and won league championships all
five years she coached. She had a 100-12
league record and a 148-27 overall record as a softball coach. Her 1981 team at Lansing Eastern won the
state softball championship; her teams also won many tournament and league
championships.
She pointed
out that her family had an athletic background as her father was an athletic
trainer at Michigan State. She also
thanked Eleanor Dorson, an advisor who helped her get started.
She was
proud to be part of the MSU women’s athletic program in its infant stages. As a coach, she strived to stress fundamentals,
coach with patience and to make the sports fun for the players.
When Title
IX took effect, she helped get the Lansing Eastern athletic programs
started. She is really pleased with the
progress that has been made in women’s athletics.
She pointed
out that as a coach, “You are only as good as the athletes you can work with.” She thanked her athletes for helping her to
succeed as a coach.
